Springfield: Where goodness got its name
True to its name, Springfield is simply overflowing with pleasant vistas and breathtaking valleys. Founded in 1882 by Captain James Dawson Spearman, this delightful community provides a retreat for those who like the finer things in life.
If wine and art sound like a fine combination to you, then Springfield is the place to be. Don’t miss Soaring Wings Vineyard, the labor of love of a former Air Force pilot and a current pilot—hence its name. The winery presently produces a variety of red and white wines, some of which have won prizes in international competitions. Grab a glass and head to the tasting room for French bread, cheese, and wine with an incredible view.
Not far from the vineyard, two acres of formal and informal gardens feature the work of local, regional, and national artists at Weiss Studios and Gardens. There, proprietor and sculptor Carl Weiss blends centuries-old practices with modern techniques to create sculptures, fountains, furnishings, and more.
There’s perhaps no better concoction than nostalgia and old-time ice-cream treats. Step up to the counter of the Old Fashioned Soda Fountain at Springfield Drug. It’s a refreshing change of pace.
Other treats abound at the Sarpy County Fair, which envelops Springfield with a carnival-like celebration for one week every summer. The fairgrounds also hosts events throughout the year, such as flea markets, rodeos, and other fun happenings.
